The castle itself is a very well preserved example of an Irish Tower House, built in c 1500 by the O’Flaherty’s it sits close to the shores of Lough Corrib and stands on a rocky island. On site there is also the remains of a banqueting hall, watch tower, double bawn and bastions.

The infamous Grainuaile/Grace O’Malley married Donal an Chogaidh O’Flaherty in 1546 joining together these two great families.
