Kylemore Abbey was built in the late 1800s by Mitchell Henry MP as a love token for his wife Margaret, who tragically died at the age of 45 leaving behind a heartbroken Mitchell and family, the youngest child being just two years of age.
In 1903 the Estate was sold to the Duke of Manchester (William Angus Drogo Montague) and his Duchess of Manchester , Helena Zimmerman.
The Benedictine nuns took up residence in 1920, and opened up their boarding school for girls in 1923. The school itself closed it doors in 2010.
